Hiring in a Tight Market: What AU Tech Candidates Actually Want in 2026

  • Staffing
  • Hiring

Every hiring manager we talk to assumes salary is the deciding factor when a candidate weighs two offers. It matters — but for experienced technologists in the current Australian market, it’s rarely the thing that breaks the tie. Here’s what is.

Time-to-decision

Strong candidates are usually interviewing in more than one process at once. A five-stage interview loop stretched over six weeks doesn’t just risk losing them to a faster-moving competitor — it signals something about how decisions get made inside the business. Candidates read a slow process as a preview of a slow employer.

Technical clarity, early

Vague job ads (“looking for a rockstar full-stack developer”) get fewer strong applicants, not more. Candidates who are good enough to have options want to know what stack, what problem, and what they’d actually be doing in the first 90 days — before they invest time in an interview process.

Remote and hybrid flexibility, specifically stated

“Flexible working” as a phrase has stopped meaning much — candidates ask for the actual policy: how many days in office, which office, and whether that’s enforced or aspirational. Ambiguity here costs more offers than it used to.

Who they’ll actually work with

Late-stage candidates increasingly ask to speak with a future teammate, not just a hiring manager and recruiter. Being able to offer that — a real conversation with someone doing the job — is a genuine differentiator, and costs nothing to provide.

A recruiter who understands the role

This is the one we’d flag as a recruiter, not just an employer, consideration: a recruiter who can’t explain the technical difference between the roles they’re representing loses good candidates before an employer even gets a chance to. It’s a large part of why CoralCloud’s recruiters work inside the same technical practices we deliver engineering work through, rather than as a separate generalist function.

Where this leaves employers

None of the above requires a bigger budget — it requires a faster, clearer process and recruiters who can speak credibly about the work. If your current process is losing candidates at offer stage, that’s usually where to look first. Talk to our staffing team about what a faster process could look like for your next hire.
